ISLAMABAD: Members of the Upper House of parliament on Tuesday vowed to take strict action against those government officials who mislead, conceal or provide wrong information to parliament.
Senate Standing Committee on Rules and Procedures said the government officials have made it a routine to provide wrong information to parliament and warned that this will not be tolerated. Committee Chairman Tahir Hussain Mashhadi said parliament is supreme and no one would be allowed to provide wrong information to it. The committee was discussing the privilege motion of Senator Saeed Ghani regarding Ministry of Finance’s alleged misleading of parliament while giving answer to his written question.
The senator had asked the Finance Division to provide details of the cases of privatisation undertaken by the FIA, NAB or any other agency for investigation since 1990, including the findings of the investigation and the action taken by the government in the light of those findings. Ghani also told the committee that the Finance Division, in its written reply, said no enquiry has been carried out against the MCB by FIA or NAB, but when the same question sent to the Law Division, it was informed that an enquiry has been conducted by NAB and sent to the State Bank of Pakistan for action.
The senator questioned why the Ministry of Finance could not provide information about the enquiry against the MCB by NAB. Finance Secretary Waqar Masood told the committee that when the question came to the Finance Division, it was referred to the Privatisation Commission because it related to it. The Privatisation Commission claimed that there was no record of any enquiry against the MCB.
The secretary said there was nothing to conceal on the part of the Ministry of Finance. Privatisation Commission secretary told the committee that the Privatisation Commission was established in 1991, while the privatisation of MCB took place in 1990, therefore, it does not have any record of it.
