Court sends PTV MD home

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday nullified the appointment of PTV Managing Director Muhammad Maalik. In its short order, the IHC declared the appointment of PTV MD null and void being illegal and non-transparent. A single bench comprising Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui gave the decision on the petition of former acting MD Qazi Mustafa Kamal. The court in its short order said the government had made appointment of PTV MD in an illegal and non-transparent manner. The court said government appointed the MD under its pick and choose policy which runs contrary to the norms of merit. Government ignored other senior officers while appointing Muhammad Maalik as MD, the verdict said. Barrister Faisal Khan Toro, counsel for the petitioner, told the court that government advertised the post of MD three times. Every time changes were made in the advertisement, he said. Selection committee had short-listed three out of five names in connection with the appointment of PTV MD, he said, and added that Jamal Shah topped the list while Muhammad Maalik stood second. He said the government ignored master’s degree holders and appointed a graduate as the MD. He told the court that Muhammad Maalik is owner of an advertising company and his company was to pay Rs 7 million to the PTV. When the government assured him that he would be appointed MD, he paid the outstanding dues to the PTV, he added. The hearing of the case was adjourned.
