ISLAMABAD: National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq will decide the fate of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)’s members of the Lower House of parliament who have tendered their resignation, after his return to Islamabad today (Monday).
The PTI legislators had submitted their resignations as part of the party’s protest campaign against the alleged rigging in the last year’s general elections. However, it remains a mystery as to how many PTI lawmakers have resigned. They party has 34 members in the National Assembly. There have been reports about division in the ranks of the PTI over the issue of resignations. The ball is, however, now in the court of Ayaz Sadiq, who has the discretion to accept these resignations and then forward them to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), which would then notify these seats as vacant.
The political parties, on the other hand, advised Speaker Ayaz Sadiq to wait for some time before accepting the resignations, hoping a solution might be found to the current political stalemate. Mediators have been shuttling between the PTI and PML-N government to resolve the crisis. Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Sirajul Haq is a strong proponent of delaying the decision on the resignations of PTI’s lawmakers. He has advised the NA speaker to not take a decision in haste as it would further escalate the political tension in the country.
