PTI wants penalties, not ban on Geo, says Shireen

Party spokesperson shares ‘facts’ with media against private news channel

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Information Secretary Shireen Mazari on Thursday came up with ‘facts and figures’ against private Geo News television and blamed it for practicing journalism of ‘blackmailing’ in Pakistan.

Speaking to journalists persons here, she said that PTI does not want a ban on Geo but if laws have been broken the penalties associated with those laws must be enforce. She said that PTI demands an audit of Geo/Jang group and the companies owning these enterprises and a revelation of all sources of funding coming from overseas.

The PTI leader said that her party wants group owners to apologise to Imran Khan for a deliberate vilification campaign against him being carried out at their behest by their employees. She claimed that Geo provided maximum coverage to Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-N in 2013 election whereas the PTI was on number three in the coverage slot.

“Geo is practicing journalism of blackmailing in Pakistan whereas Mr Nawaz Sharif is violating the law made by his own party in the past. He is destabilizing institutions by supporting a particular media group,” she directly pointed finger at the prime minister. She said the Nawaz government should also apologise to the nation for not taking action against the channel.
