Lawmakers unanimous to protect democracy: Saad


ISLAMABAD: Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique on Tuesday said that lawmakers from all the political parties are unanimous to protect parliament, democracy and constitution at all costs.
Talking to media outside the Parliament House, he said a group of thousand people could not decide the fate of 18 million people. He said people’s representatives had been elected by 4 million people and group of some people want to decide their fate which is unfair.
The minister said Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan had promised not to enter Red Zone but he breached his commitment.
The government is constantly trying to engage Pakistan Awami Tehreek and PTI in negotiations but so far all such efforts have remained futile.
He said the protesting parties should not do politics on bodies and open doors for dialogue for the sake of the country. The minister said he approached Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Dr Arif Alvi and Asad Umer for talks. He said by entering Red Zone what kind of message they want to give to international community that Pakistan is an unsafe country. He said marchers were playing with sovereignty of the country.
Separately, Planning and Development Minister Ahsan said that political and democratic forces are collectively engaged with the PTI and PAT to find an amicable political solution of the current situation.
Talking to reporters, he said the government is demonstrating utmost flexibility and patience and advising the same to its supporters who are perturbed over the situation created by a few thousand people.
He said security measures would also be taken for the security of the red zone in the wake of provocative calls given by the PTI and the Awami Tehreek. 
He said the parliament is not the property of a single party. It is a sovereign institution representing 180 million people of the country. Any attack on this sacred institution will be considered an attack on the constitution and democracy.
Ahsan Iqbal said the country was not being run by any NGO but the PML-N, which was the most powerful political force of this country.
He said only strong economy could ensure poverty alleviation, provision of jobs sovereignty of the country. He said some elements wanted to create unrest to gain political goals. 
He said the government had initiated work on the energy projects to generate around 1040MW electricity.
He urged people not to be the part of the people, who wanted to create instability in the country. 
He said PTI and PAT wanted to use children and women as human shield.
