SARGODHA: Three persons were killed when unidentified gunmen opened fire on a car carrying Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) leader in Sargodha on Saturday morning.
According to police, the incident occurred at Noori Gate in Sargodha when ASWJ Deputy Chief of Punjab chapter Maulana Abdul Hameed Khalid along with others was on his way from Bhakkar to attend the hearing at an anti-terrorism court in Sargodha.
The assailants ambushed the vehicle that killed three persons and critically injured two others, including the ASWJ leader. The bodies and injured were moved to the District Headquarters Hospital.
Police reached to the spot and cordoned off the area following the attack.
The killings took place a day after unidentified gunmen shot dead a senior Sunni religious leader and two of his associates in Karachi on Friday.
A police spokesman said attackers sprayed bullets at the car of Usman Yar Khan, the provincial deputy chief of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, a religious party headed by Samiul Haq known in the West as “father of the Taliban”.
“They were returning after attending a seminar about the future of the Karachi operation,” said JUI-S senior leader Mufti Hammadullah Madni.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
JUI-S chief Maulana Samiul Haq had condemned the killings and announced three-day countrywide mourning over the incident.
