Court defers indictment of Zardari in two NAB references

ISLAMABAD: Former president Asif Ali Zardari on Saturday submitted petitions in an accountability court praying for his acquittal in all the five references against him. The court, issuing notice to NAB, fixed the hearing of the petitions for February 3.
Accountability Court judge Muhammad Bashir heard the references against Zardari.
The former president’s counsel, Farooq H Naek, filed the petitions for acquittalof his client in the references that included polo ground, SGS, Cotecna, ARYand Ursus tractors. The indictment in the two references was then put off. Naek said that none of the references had evidence against his client and, therefore, he should be acquitted as the court had already acquitted other accused in these references.
During the course of proceedings, Naek also sought exemption for his client’s appearance in court, saying that the former president could not appear due to security threats. The judge approved the petition of Zardari’s exemption from appearance in court for one day, while reserved the decision on the plea for granting permanent exemption.
