ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Nisar Ali Khan and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Monday met Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif in Rawalpindi.
This was the second meeting between the two PML-N leaders and army chief within a span of five days, with the last such meeting held on August14. Although there was no official confirmation of the meeting, but sources insisted that consultations were held in the backdrop of the current political impasse prompted by sit-ins of PTI and PAT in the heart of capital, Islamabad. Sources said fears being expressed by some quarters notwithstanding, the military leadership is bent on keeping itself out of political matters, conveying in categorical manner that no one would be allowed to create chaos in the country. The meeting also discussed the security situation in the country along with issues related to law and order. PTI chief Imran Khan and PAT chief Tahirul Qadri’s demand that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif should resign also came under discussion. Sources said that it was agreed during the meeting that dialogue should be opened immediately with the PTI and PAT to come to middle ground. The PML N leadership is learnt to have assured that the government will review the demands of PTI and PAT within the ambit of the constitution.
Meanwhile, outgoing International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Commander General Joseph Dunford called on General Raheel Sharif at the General Headquarters on Monday. During the meeting, matters of mutual interest came under discussion, including post-election situation in Afghanistan and coordination along Pak-Afghan border. The COAS particularly thanked the outgoing ISAF commander for his efforts towards stability in Afghanistan.
