Blast at Tableeghi Markaz kills nine

PESHAWAR: A bomb blast at a preaching centre of the Tableeghi Jamaat on Thursday killed at least nine people and wounded more than 60, officials said.
The blast occurred in a centre run by the Tableeghi Jamaat just metres from the military quarter of Peshawar. “The death toll from the blast at preaching centre has raised to nine” Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Minister Shoukat Yousufzai said. “Seven patients are in critical condition and I fear a rise in the death toll,” he said. An AFP correspondent present at the scene said human flesh and blood was scattered on the ground. “As we began Maghrib prayer there was a big explosion,” an eyewitness told reporters at the Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) where he was administered first-aid for shrapnel wounds. The blast targeted the Tableeghi Markaz on Pajaggi Road where thousands of people assemble every Thursday evening for Shab-e-Jumma (Thursday) congregation. Police is investigating what caused the explosion. “The nature of the blast is not yet known,” said Cantt SP Muhammad Faisal. One source said that the bomb was planted inside the markaz and detonated remotely. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, which mostly carries out such attacks, denied responsibility for the explosion. “We have not carried out this attack,” TTP spokesman Shahidullah Shahid told local media. Siddique Akbar, a 29-year-old student of Peshawar University, said he was standing in the last row during the blast. “There was a huge explosion and the lights went off, people were screaming and rushing towards the gate pushing each other and I fell to the ground and people were running over me,” he said.
