Stormy rains leave 18 dead

PESHAWAR: The death toll has reached eighteen while more than fifty people were injured due to stormy rains in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) capital on Saturday. Following the rain-related deaths and injuries, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ordered monetary compensations for the human casualties caused by the deadly downpour in and around Peshawar. He had also directed the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PMDA) to jump-start relief efforts. Some 50 persons sustained injuries in separate incidents of roofs and walls of houses collapsing in various areas of the city. Rescue activities were underway, while the injured persons were rushed to Lady Reading Hospital. The rescue sources said that many wounded persons were in critical condition. Heavy downpour with thunderstorms uprooted trees and electricity polls causing a disruption in the power supply to many areas of the city for several hours. According to PESCO sources, as many as 30 feeders were also tripped due to the heavy rain.
