PEMRA meeting ‘postponed’ indefinitely

Abbasi says four members will give decision

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has postponed the meeting scheduled to be held on Friday till indefinite period.


The meeting was due to deliberate upon the opinion from the Ministry of Law Affairs over the complaint filed by the Ministry of Defence on the issue of a private television channel. However, PEMRA member Israr Abbasi said that the meeting was called by PEMRA authority and it cannot be cancelled by a single person.


He said that the meeting would undergo according to the schedule. Abbasi said if there would be four members present then meeting would undergo today. “We will give the decision,” he said. To nominate Kamal-ul-Deen in the meeting was illegal, he would not to be allowed to sit in the meeting, he said.


He also said that pressure from the government was now open and it seems that the government wants to abolish the authority. According to PEMRA sources, the Ministry of Law Affairs has not yet submitted its opinion to the authority.
