Senate committee stresses good governance

ISLAMABAD: The Senate Committee on Rules of Procedure and Privileges on Wednesday observed that good governance was the only way to protect the rights of the masses and the respect for law would help resolve problems faced by the country. The committee met under the chairmanship of Senator Col (r) Syed Tahir Hussain Mashhadi at Parliament House. Briefing the committee, Karachi (South) Deputy Commissioner, Mustafa Jamal Qazi said that he respects the parliamentarians and all the steps against encroachments in Karachi were taken under the law of land. He said Karachi is a big city facing several issues including encroachment and it was decided to clear the roads for traffic. A committee member Senator Abdul Rauf said action against pushcarts was not according to the law and the operation in the name of encroachments was conducted during nights. The Karachi (South) deputy commissioner assured the committee that in future he would remain careful and would ensure that nobody would violate the rules and regulations. He also tendered an apology to the committee that was accepted by members of the body. The committee directed the deputy commissioner to compensate for the damages of those people, who lost their luggage in the operation and respect the citizens. The meeting was attended by senators Islamuddin Shaikh, Aitzaz Ahsan, Afrasiab Khattak, Mian Raza Rabbani, Professor Sajid Mir, Ch. Muhammad Jaffar Iqbal and Abdul Rauf.
