ISLAMABAD – US Deputy Secretary of State William J Burns called on Adviser to prime minister on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs here on Friday.
Pak-US bilateral relations and regional issues were discussed during the meeting. The adviser emphasised the importance Pakistan attaches to stronger Pak-US cooperation and expressed satisfaction on the progress made in this regard since the visit of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to Washington last year.
US Ambassador to Pakistan Richard Olson also attended the meeting. The deputy secretary of state also recalled the adviser’s visit to Washington in January this year for the Ministerial Review of the Pakistan-US Strategic Dialogue. Both discussed cooperation in education and science and technology areas under the umbrella of strategic dialogue.
Regional issues including Afghanistan were also discussed. The adviser emphasised the importance of peace and stability in Afghanistan and expressed satisfaction at the successful conclusion of the first phase of election in April this year. He said Pakistan would continue to play a constructive role in this regard.
The significance of continued consultations between Pakistan and the US in this regard was reiterated during the meeting.
