LAHORE – The Lahore High Court on Monday adjourned the hearing of a petition for removal of Punjab University Vice Chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran on charges of harassment.
Justice Muhammad Farrukh Irfan Khan was hearing the petition filed by Punjab University Law College lecturer Khujista Rehan. As proceedings started, VC's counsel Dr Khalid Ranjha pleaded the court to vacate stay on syndicate proceedings against Khujista as it was an independent institution.
However, the petitioner's counsel Aftab Ahamd Bajwa submitted that the university administration suspended three professors, including Prof Dr Ahsan Akhtar Naz and Prof Dr Iftikhar Baloch, after charges of harassment were leveled against them. Similarly, the vice chancellor should also be suspended for a transparent inquiry, he added.
The VC's counsel contended that the petitioner had leveled baseless allegations against his client. Submitting an audio compact disc of recorded calls, he said the petitioner was involved in threatening university's director sports on phone.
At this stage, the court observed that everyone was equal before the law and it was responsibility of court to protect fundamental rights of the citizens. The court observed that allegation leveled against vice chancellor was a serious matter which could not be ignored. The court adjourning the matter sought further arguments from both parties.
