Protests: Chinese president ‘calls off’ Pakistan tour

ISLAMABAD: Chinese President Xi Jinping’s trip to Pakistan was postponed on Thursday as his security team did not give him clearance to visit the country. Xi’s security delegation was in Islamabad on Wednesday to review the security situation in light of the protests and was not satisfied with the arrangements. The Chinese president was scheduled to arrive in Islamabad on September 14. According to the sources, the Chinese ambassador to Pakistan had requested the government to vacate the Red Zone of Islamabad ahead of the Chinese president’s visit. The message of Chinese ambassador was conveyed to both the leaders of the protesting parties, the sources said. Since the last two days, rumours were circulating in the federal capital that the Chinese president may postpone or cancel his visit due to the ongoing political crisis between the government and demonstrators led by PTI Chairman Imran Khan and Pakistan Awami Tehreek chief Tahirul Qadri.
