NDMA issues flood warning

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) had given a forecast of a weather system moving from Indian Rajasthan which could lead to widespread heavy to very heavy rains/thunderstorm in northeast Punjab and Kashmir between 4 to 7 September. The PMD forecasts indicated a well-marked monsoon low-lying over Rajasthan which could affect upper catchments of all the major rivers except Indus. Accordingly a very high to exceptionally high flood level has been predicted in River Chenab and its associated nullahs, where as high flood level is expected in River Ravi along with its associated nullahs. High to very high flood level is also expected in Jhelum and Sutlej rivers. To the flood alerts and warnings issued by the PMD, the NDMA has issued advisories to evacuate population and livestock residing/present in river courses and in low-lying areas. PDMAs and district administrations have been asked to place all response agencies and health units on alert. The entire situation including the weather updates/river flows is being closely monitored, round the clock. NDMA is in close contact with all PDMAs. Punjab PDMA and AJK SDMA have been offered assistance by NDMA to meet any requirements. Close coordination is also being kept with PMD, FFC and Pakistan Commission for Indus Water (PCIW). A meeting has also been held with concerned departments at NDMA to review the situation.
