KARACHI: At least four policemen were killed in an armed attacked in Ali Akber Shah Goth locality of the city on Monday.
As per reports, the attackers struck when a police patrol stopped for routine snap checking. Armed bikers fired indiscriminately at the policemen, injuring four of them. Reacting on information rescue teams rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where doctors pronounced all four dead. The deceased policemen were identified as Sub-Inspector Aftab, Head Constable Shafi, constables Didar Ali and Akhter Ali.
The incident occurred in Ibrahim Haidri area, a poor neighbourhood in the eastern part of the port city where the policemen were on duty. “The attackers came on motorcycles, they opened fire on the police and fled away,” senior police official Munir Shaikh told AFP, adding that “all four policemen died in the attack”. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. Rangers are currently taking part in a joint operation with police in Karachi aimed at cleansing the city of terrorists and other hardcore criminals, including hired killers, gun runners and drug peddlers. Around 25 policemen have been killed in the line duty during the first month of this year. Earlier in the month, the Sindh government decided to purchase 300 armoured vehicles and more bulletproof jackets for the safety of the police officials. It had approved a summary for the purchase of 300 armoured vehicles, bulletproof mobile vans, and bulletproof jackets to boost the morale and safety of 30,000 police officials. City police chief Shahid Hayat has said that Karachi has become more complex, and political, religious criminals and militants of various outfits are engaged in the attacks on police personnel.
