ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Dr Tahirul Qadri on Tuesday claimed that the current rulers are not interested in serving the people.
Addressing the participants of both PTI and PAT sit-ins, Dr Qadri said the lawmakers talked about the constitution, whose 40 articles that guarantee basic human rights, were suspended by them. He said, “We want trial of these rulers under the Article 6, for suspending 40 articles of the constitution that assure social justice, food, clothing, accommodation, health and education to the people.”
He said that not a single article of the constitution had been implemented despite lapse of 41 years (since 1971 constitution).
“Our struggle is about implementation of first 40 articles of the constitution,” Qadri said. In a rare sight, Qadri stood beside PTI Chairman Imran Khan atop a container to address the PTI and PAT workers because there was some fault in the sound system of Qadri’s container. The PAT chief said, “We are not against democracy and the constitution, we never negated democracy and constitution.”
The PAT chief said his struggle is for the restoration of the suspended articles. Dr Qadri said the rulers shot dead 14 people in Model Town and call it democracy. He said, “Your (Nawaz Sharif) democracy is something else, while our democracy stresses on justice, food and other basic rights for the people.”
The PAT chief said that current rulers were more interested in their business and rule as compared to serving the people and the state. He said their democracy meant forming an election commission to manoeuvre the elections through returning officers (ROs) and utilising the entire state machinery for winning the polls.
Qadri said democracy meant accountability across the board, transparency and stability of the institutions. He said that Imran Khan kept on requesting for 14 months to open four constituencies, but nobody listened to him, adding, “This is what you call democracy.”
Coming to the attack on PTV office, Qadri said that the attackers were not PAT or PTI workers. He said, “We do not have people like Gullu Butt and Billu Butt.” He also flayed Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar for accusing the marchers of carrying axes and hammers.
Taking exception to Mehmood Khan Achakzai, Qadri said eight of his family members were bearing the fruits of this so-called democracy, while 24 members of the Sharif family were part of the government. He also criticised Fazlur Rehman for referring to the marchers as nomads. Moreover, the PAT chief felicitated the participants over the registration of the FIR of Model Town carnage as per PAT’s application and read out the clauses to his workers and supporters.
Meanwhile, PPP leader Qamar Zaman Kaira met Qadri to resolve the matter politically. After the meeting, Kaira said there are good signals from joint sitting of parliament and hoped that political uncertainty would resolve soon. He reiterated his plea for resolving the matters through dialogue. To a question, he said he had full party support.
