ISLAMABAD – Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) here on Thursday directed the federal government to submit a reply within 15 days in four various petitions challenging the appointment of Dr Mukhtar Ahmad as chairman of the Higher Education Commission (HEC).
The petitions also challenged Dr Mukhtar’s previous appointment as executive director of the Higher Education Commission, his modified salary package, irregularities and dual degree. On June 25, 2014, petitioner Arsal Ikram nominated the PM Secretariat, Establishment Division secretary, the Ministry of Education, Training and Standards in Higher Education, Minister for Defence Khawaja Muhammad Asif and HEC Chairman Dr Mukhtar Ahmad as respondents.
Through his petition, he informed the court that Dr Mukhtar had been appointed as the HEC chairman in violation of law, rules and eligibility criteria. The court, putting off the matter, directed that all petitions pertaining to Dr Mukhtar should be clubbed and put before the court in the first week of July.
