Rumour mill goes into top gear

RAWALPINDI: Rumours were rife on Thursday that the option to send Pervez Musharraf abroad for medical treatment is under consideration.  According to the sources, the decision on whether to send Musharraf abroad or to treat him in the country would be taken after the release of his medical report. The sources further said that Musharraf ’s wife, Sehba Musharraf reached the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC), where her husband is currently under treatment. Musharraf’s daughter has also been called from Karachi to Islamabad.  According to media reports the former military ruler is out of danger and will spend the next couple of days at the AFIC hospital. Reports of Musharraf being transferred abroad for treatment were in circulation on Thursday, however Defence Minister Khawaja Asif clarified that no such decision has been taken. He said that this relief could only be given by the court. After meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Asif said that all necessary medical facilities are available in the country, however the government will not object if the court permits Musharraf’s transfer abroad. Following his failure to appear before the court, judges of the special court deliberated in their chambers for several hours and ruled against issuing Musharraf’s arrest warrant. Special prosecutor Akram Sheikh had sought arrest warrant of the former dictator and the special court’s ruling in this regard was highly anticipated. Musharraf had failed to appear before the court on Wednesday and on December 24 after explosives were found near his home.
