KARACHI – Pakistan International Airlines’ (PIA) Joint Action Committee (JAC) on Tuesday has announced complete and permanent shutdown of its operations. Many airports in Pakistan are witnessing a travel chaos as protesting employees of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) blocked operations in protest against proposed privatisation of the national flag carrier. According to the channel, JAC’s Chairman Sohail Baloch stated that they will contact the court for registering case against the killing of the two PIA employees that occurred earlier during a protest against privatisation of the organisation. Pakistan Airlines Pilots’ Association (PALPA) has also announced not to take part in any operation. The JAC chairman also announced that a sit in protest will be staged in the PIA headquarters. Addressing a press conference in Karachi, the JAC chairman has demanded that the incident should be investigated under a Justice of the high court. Situation took an ugly turn yesterday when three protesters were killed in a shooting incident, which they blamed on security officials deployed by the government to disperse them. – PIA Chairman Nasser Jafar resigns – The eventful day saw PIA chairman Nasser Jafar quit his office following the killing of protesters. At least 27 flights of the PIA were canceled by Tuesday midnight as more employees of the airline landed in Pakistan. Flights of private airlines are also likely to be affected by the situation – which remains far from resolved after Tuesday events – with prime minister threatening to terminate the protesting employees. Two dead as PIA protesters clash with police The two protesting workers of Pakistan International Airline (PIA) were dead during clash between Rangers and the police while marching towards Jinnah International Airport in Karachi. Protesting workers will be fired, jailed: Nawaz Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday said protesting employees of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) will be fired from service and can be sent to jail for a year. Talking to reporters during his visit to a coal power plant in Sahiwal, the prime minister said that the airline employees working during the strike will be given special rewards for their service. Nawaz accused PIA workers of politicising the privatisation issue by resorting to strikes, adding that such acts were costing PIA Rs 100 million per day. Meanwhile Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the PIA employees said they would neither end the protest nor would they resume the flight operations. The JAC also decided to get the FIR of murder of their colleagues lodged against Information Minister Pervaiz Rasheed, Senator Mushahidullah Khan and Special Assistant on Aviation Shujaat Azeem.
