KARACHI: President Mamnoon Hussain has said that efforts are under way for the release of Pakistani journalist Faizullah Khan imprisoned in Afghanistan.
Talking to a journalists’ delegation here on Saturday, he said, if needed, he would personally talk to Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai for the release of Faizullah, as he has not committed such a crime that he is punished so severely.
A delegation of the office-bearers of PFUJ, KUJ (Dastoor) and the Karachi Press Club (KPC) called on the President. During the meeting, they raised the issue of ARY TV channel’s reporter Faizullah with the President.
The delegation told the President an Afghan court has sentenced him to four years imprisonment for not possessing travel documents. They said that an appeal for freeing of the journalist has reached the Afghan President.
President Mamnoon Hussain told the delegation that efforts are being made for the release of the Pakistani journalist, and their successful outcome is expected soon.
The delegation also apprised the President of disruption in Geo TV’s transmissions and inappropriate conduct of cable operators. The President said that there is no hand of the Government in the issue of Geo TV.
He further said that infighting in the media is unfortunate. He added that the media should act responsibly and resolve their matters through talks.
The journalists also raised the issue of Wage Board Award with he President.
The office-bearers of the KPC invited President Mamnoon Hussain to visit the press club.
The delegation included PFUJ President Idrees Bakhtiar, KUJ (Dastoor) President Sajid Aziz, Secretary Rizwan Bhatti, KPC President Imtiaz Faran, Secretary Amir Latif and other office-bearers. Faizullah’s wife Sania Faiz and his son were also present.
