Driver killed, container torched in Quetta

QUETTA: The driver of a container carrying Afghan transit goods was shot dead and the container was set ablaze in the provincial capital on Monday. At least 12 drivers have been targeted on the highways in different areas of Balochistan in the past two months. According to the reports, the container was en route to Chaman from Karachi when it was intercepted by unidentified men wearing masks in the suburbs of Quetta.  The attackers managed to flee from the scene after shooting the driver and setting the container on fire, said the sources. The deceased was identified as Raza Muhammad. The All Balochistan Transporters’ Association took out a rally along with the body and staged a protest demonstration outside the Quetta Press Club. The protesting transporters and drivers shouted slogans against the government and law enforcers for their failure to protect the life and property of the people on national highway. “Raza Muhammad was the 12th driver killed by assailants in Balochistan during the past two months. More than 30 containers, carrying goods of Afghan transit trade to Chaman from Karachi, have been attacked in different areas of Balochistan,” Noor Ahmed, President of Transporters Association, told the protestors. “They are not the drivers of NATO containers,” he said. “The attackers think they are NATO containers and target the drivers. NATO supplies are not being attacked, these containers belonged to Afghan Transit Trade,” he said.
