Several Taliban leaders ‘trapped’ in NWA

ISLAMABAD: Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said on Tuesday that several Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) commanders were entrapped in the North Waziristan Agency. “They are locked in the security forces trap and they don’ know where to go,” the minister said, adding that the security commanders were regularly updating Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Zarb-e-Azb’s operational progress. “There would be a remarkable improvement in the security environment once the terrorists are wiped out from the NWA. They (TTP) have to pay for what they have done to the people of Pakistan.”
With the launch of the ground offensive in North Waziristan Agency the security forces are optimistic that the top leadership of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan would be taken on, with the planned narrowing down of the siege. They are desperately trying to break the cordon but have failed each time, informed intelligence insiders told Daily Times in a recent background interaction, referring to repeated and foiled attempts by the TTP men to break the siege. “With each passing day, the intensity of their efforts is dying down,” commented an intelligence official. The TTP leadership, according to the officials, is mainly based in the underground caves and deep tunnels constructed in the villages of Shawal, Miranshah and Mir Ali. “Some of these tunnels are over hundred-feet deep. Shawal is the area where they (TTP commanders) have major concentration,” a counter-terrorism official at a security agency said.
