Sir: Undeniably, rape is considered one of the most heinous crimes imaginable but, unfortunately, the scourge of rape and murder of innocent children, especially baby girls, has alarmingly surged in our society. This reflects nothing but moral degradation, barbarity and savagery in our society. Sindhu Soomro, age five, was gang raped and strangled to death by two sick men in Larkana. It appears that the callous ruling elite has forgotten the fundamental responsibility of any government, which is the safety and protection of its citizens. That is why such horrible things happen frequently in our society. Sindh has become the most insecure and unsafe place for children. Children are reported to be at highest risk in Larkana. Like many others, I am of the opinion that there should be nothing less than the death penalty for child rapists and a rigorous penalty for child molestation. This would serve as an excellent deterrent mechanism. Above all, internal guidance is needed for Pakistani society. Enlightened individuals, the media and educational institutions should come together to make sure that there are no more child victims. HASHIM ABRO Islamabad
