Sir: Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s address to members of a protest against Indian oppression in Kashmir was rudely interrupted by supporters of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), who heckled him and threw objects at him. This is a very unfortunate thing to have happened since earlier supporters of the PTI also chanted “go Nawaz go” slogans outside the UN building in New York when the prime minister went to attend the UN General Assembly. The PTI and its rowdy followers do not see the negative impact of their actions on our international image. Bilawal’s speech was not a rousing or even very significant event but the behaviour of the protestors made it more notable. Actually, the speech was so average that Bilawal should realise that his attempts to appear patriotic are not convincing and merely highlight how disconnected he is from the reality of Pakistan. Tired slogans about Kashmir and our willingness to bleed for it are less popular than slogans against politicians these days. People want to see visible change, not politicians from dynastic families trotting out familiar phrases. If Bilawal really cares about Kashmir he should prove it by lobbying journalists and politicians outside the country to take an interest in Kashmir. That is a better use of his family name.
