Sir: The National Police Bureau (NPB) together with the Gender Responsive Policing (GRP) project of the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) is trying to plan and implement ‘first-among-equals’ gender responsive policing reform. In this connection, last month a three-day international conference on the topic ‘Gender responsive policing: promising peaceful societies,’ was held in Pakistan, attended by police officers and by delegations from numerous Muslim countries. The experiences shared by the participants were aimed at enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of police systems to help create peaceful societies around the world. One of the team members of the GRP project rightly proposed that for effective gender responsive policing in Pakistan, it is necessary to ensure that at least 21 percent of the police are females by the end of 2015. Based on the recent announcements, advertisements and appointments it has made it seems that the Sindh police is strongly committed to this initiative and are working towards creating gender responsive policing. The police in other federating units must also follow suit. In order to achieve this difficult goal it is essential to increase the number of women in field policing. HASHIM ABRO Islamabad
