Sir: I firmly believe that democracy is about justice: political justice, socio-economic justice and, indeed, judicial justice. Democracy denotes a system wherein all citizens feel protected by the same standards or rules, to be interpreted by the same principles at all times and as fairly as possible. The political system is there to serve the needs of the people and combat the ills that beset citizens such that they do not enjoy the rights of joy and happiness. There can be no social justice in a country like ours where poverty is rampant, where a few hundred families get richer and richer at the expense of the majority. All this threatens democracy.
