Sir: The decision of the Milli Yakjehti Council to monitor Friday sermons to counter hate speech is a small step but is in the right direction. In the past, religious parties and groups have mostly remained mum on the issue of extremism and the spreading of venom by hate-mongers. Due to their inaction and silence, many clerics have misused the mosque’s loudspeakers to spread hate and violence. Now, if religious groups have gathered together to promote religious and sectarian harmony, the step should be supported till its conclusion. Islam is the other name of peace and people distorting its meaning should be checked and punished. It is a small step on a long road but one should hope that it will achieve meaningful results.HAFSA KHALEDVia Email
