Sir: We discuss and debate politics for hours in our houses and offices and do not get tired. It is the most important pursuit in our lives. We talk about trivial matters like how will Asif Zardari respond in case the government takes action against corrupt PPP leaders, or what will be Imran Khan’s next place for a sit-in? We read the statements of the government ministers and advisers against their political opponents. So far, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has kept his cool in the face of adverse criticism hurled at him. But he was dismayed and disturbed due to Zardari’s recent scathing criticism. Most of our time is spent in watching TV talk shows and analysts’ abrasive comments that do not make any sense. None of the political leaders ever discuss about the country’s economic policies related to the progress and prosperity of the people and good governance. Although these leaders have no or little knowledge about economic policies, yet they have experts who can brief and educate them. Still they are not interested in such issues. Finance Minister Ishaq Dar has proposed that the opposition and government should jointly work on formulating a better economic policy. I think it is a good suggestion and both the opposition and government should work on it. It is important to delineate the contours of an economic charter and implement it in letter and spirit. The policies should be continued even if the government is changed. Take the example of other developed countries where the governments change but the economic policy remains the same. No changes are made to disturb the progress and prosperity of the nation. It is a key to their economic development. We need to start now before it becomes too late to act. The operation against corrupt elements belonging to various political parties should continue. An across the board accountability must continue. JAVAID BASHIRLahore
