Sir: Education is a must to survive today’s world but is often provided by private universities in the name of excellence and a lot of misapprehensions. I recently enrolled in a private university and the management of the university directed us to bring in sponsorship of Rs 50,000 for a fashion show and job fair, and also to bring in a professional speaker for a workshop, for which the speaker will definitely charge a fee that is also to be borne by the students. Is it our responsibility to bring in such sponsorships and professional speakers despite already paying heavy fees to the university? Fashion shows are nothing but mere entertainment and have nothing to do with our development. Rather the university should be organising productive workshops or training activities in areas such as time management, skill development, career consultations, etc, that are really going to help us in our future careers. If they still want to organise such events, it should not be the responsibility of students to bring in sponsorships. I request the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to visit and review their system and their management-student coordination. MOHAMMAD ARSALAN NABI Karachi
