Sir: Nawab Akbar Bugti was a proud Baloch. He was the first person among his tribe to embrace Pakistan on partition. Bugti was a pacifist, he was never violent. Until the end, he was in favour of ‘dialogue’. Though he was never happy with the Pakistani ‘establishment’ and was against Punjab’s ‘high-handedness’, he never opposed Pakistan. All he wanted was greater autonomy over Balochistan’s natural resources within Pakistan. However, the way the veteran leader met his end, made a martyr out of him. For now, he will live longer than those who ordered his killing. His assassination proved to be a ‘political nightmare’. It radicalised the Baloch youth. They saw this as a proof that the federal government will never give them fair treatment and as a result, they took to the mountains. Today Bugti enjoys a larger than life presence in the whole Baloch world. He rules the hearts and minds of the people. All credit goes to the establishment. Niaz BetabAwaran
