Sir: Recently, I travelled through the GT Road and witnessed a number of solar panels installed on 25 foot high poles for providing road light in almost each town on the GT Road. As the panels were facing south and I was travelling from Jhelum towards Lahore, so I actually could not see the front sides of the panels. I was happy to see that the government of Punjab was investing in renewable energy. Three days later, while returning towards Mirpur, Jhelum, I had a chance to see the front sides of these solar panels. I was badly disappointed to see the miserable condition of these panels that were fully covered with dust and unfortunately none of the lights was on. This was really shocking as panels worth millions of rupees were installed on the GT Road without generating any electricity due to dust. I also witnessed that many of the panels were missing from their frames, which probably have blown away due to heavy winds or might have been stolen. Who should be held responsible for this miserable condition of these solar panels? One pole with two solar panels, a battery and couple of lights costs nearly Rs 50,000-60,000. The government of Punjab must ensure that these costly solar panels installed on the GT Road are well maintained by the concerned local authorities and there should be a mechanism for removing dust on a regular basis otherwise this heavy investment will go in vain and the people may start losing confidence in this promising technology.
