Sir: It is unfortunate that the polio vaccination campaign could not be launched from June 25 in various parts of Karachi due to security threats to the polio workers. This is a reflection of a sheer lack of commitment and coordination among various government departments. It is all the more shameful in the face of the international travel ban imposed on us. We should have responded to the restriction as a responsible member of the world community by taking emergency measures to curtail the spread of the crippling disease. Instead, we are satisfied with sending polio teams to areas relatively peaceful and by awarding travel certificates only; a typical lethargic attitude of our policy makers and decision takers. I think as a nation we have decided not to learn any lesson from the past and are hence quickly drifting towards self-destruction.
