With strong approval from the government and backed by the Pakistan Air Force, the Pakistan Army launched a massive military operation against different terrorist groups in North Waziristan (NW) on Sunday, June 15, 2014. For over a decade, these terrorists let loose a reign of terror in Pakistan, killing innocent people, destroying institutions of strategic importance and shattering the country’s economy. The military operation has finally brought an end to the dilemma that the country has unfortunately been caught in for more than a decade. Long debates and varied and divided opinion on the critical issue of terrorism in the country resulted in inaction against the perpetrators of of terrorism. Indecision on the part of the government and the other powers that matter as to how to deal with this grave issue in fact emboldened the terrorists to organise themselves well and intensify their attacks on Pakistan. With the initiation of military action in NW it seems that the government has finally accepted the fact that dialogue with the defunct Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan has come to its logical end. After a long and arduous battle, could one hope that terrorism would finally come to an end? Yes, but to attain our goal we will have to ensure that the country’s borders with all its neighbours are safe and must also ensure that the enemies of the state are denied space everywhere across the country.
