Sir: It is so good to know that our city government has come up with different traffic safety programmes for school children. It is a step in the right direction but it needs to be mentioned that school children are not the only victims of road accidents. Surveys show that more than 36 percent of victims are women. In a society where female literacy rate is less than 30 percent it would be beneficial if the city government also introduced such programmes for women who have no access to education. Considering the ever growing population of our country, health facilities and hospitals do not meet the required standards and in certain cases hospitals do not have sufficient numbers of ambulances. Therefore, in order to minimise the number of injuries due to road accidents we should organise civil traffic safety awareness programmes. After all, the government is not solely responsible for our safety. We as citizens of this society should also come forward and make people aware of it. SHEHZEEN ASIM Karachi
