Sir: As a Muslim and a Pakistani I was sad to hear the Lahore High Court has upheld the death sentence for Aasia Bibi, a Christian woman and mother of five, who is alleged to have made derogatory remarks about the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), which carries the death penalty under Section 295-C of the Pakistan Penal Code. Human rights activists in Pakistan are to be commended for their protests against the controversial blasphemy legislation, which have been ongoing since its promulgation in 1986 by General Ziaul Haq’s regime. Time and again it has been shown that this law is exploited for revenge and encourages extremism. I strongly urge and hope that parliamentarians and legislators solve this issue as soon as possible by repealing the law in order to save hundreds of innocent people. DR MOHIUDDIN WASEEMVia Email
