Sir: It is not for the first time in Pakistan that injustice has been committed with a talented student. A latest example has been found in the Balochistan University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Khuzdar. Syed Muhammad is the son of a poor family, who got distinction throughout his academic career including a position among top 20 students of Balochistan in his intermediate. Through a scholarship programme of the Higher Education Commission (HEC), he got admission to BUET Khuzdar in the Electrical Engineering Department. He appeared in the final examination this year and secured 93.61 percent marks. However, when he approached the controller examination for collecting his result card and merit certificate, both the documents were not given to him on the pretext that a female student from his class had filed a case for the reconsideration of her marks. It is interesting to note that she filed her case after a six-month gap. Anyhow, the issue was resolved and Syed Muhammad got his documents and submitted them for a post in WAPDA. When the department sent the mentioned documents for verification, once again, they were refused on the basis that the concerned authorities were reluctant to verify his documents. Dejected Syed Muhammad visited the offices of the vice-chancellor, dean, and chairman of the concerned department but to no avail. More importantly, he was threatened of grave consequences, if he visited them again. A few days ago, much to his agony, the result was manipulated and the girl student was announced as the topper by adding 50 marks to her overall score. The semester rules do not have a provision for the reconsideration of the result of three subjects after such a long gap. The administration enjoys no authority to manipulate the score whatsoever but when favouritism starts its lethal effects, very few departments remain unaffected. Therefore, I request the higher authorities of the HEC and the Governor Balochistan to look into the matter and provide justice to Syed Muhammad. SHAHDAD MURADKhuzdar
