Sir: The vicious massacre in Kenya of 28 non-Muslim passengers on a bus in Kenya by al Shabab militants bears a disturbing similarity to what happened in Pakistan to Shias massacred by the Taliban. Reports say that the bus carrying 60 people was stopped by the militants who then took the passengers off and told them to recite parts of the Quran to prove they were Muslim. Those who were unable to do so were killed. Al Shabab is a Somali militant group associated with al Qaeda that established a medieval justice system in that benighted country some years ago. They were driven out by the US along with Ethiopian and Kenyan troops, who placed their own puppet at the head of the ‘state’. As we have seen, dictators propped up by the US tend to be even worse for the people of a country than the militants but now the militants are responding in brutal fashion and appear to be learning from our very own fundamentalist sociopaths. Everywhere the US goes this type of militancy follows and because of the global nature of the so-called war on terror they have begun acting in global coordination too. This requires a broad coalition to fight but who will lead it is the question that remains to be answered. ANJUM KHAN Islamabad
