Sir: Nooruddin, a spokesman of the banned organisation Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), described the attack on the Shia Hazara-pilgrims as Fidai (a term used for suicide attacks), which killed 24 and left more than 31 injured in Mastung. As usual the prime minister, chief minister and governor Balochistan, paying lip service to the incident, have condemned the attack, expressing deep sorrow on the loss of lives. On the other hand a call was given for a shutter down strike in Quetta by the Hazara Democratic Party followed by three days mourning. The criminal silence of the government is tantamount to allowing the LeJ to carry on with their atrocious activities with complete impunity. The military has hit the Baloch insurgents hard but when it comes to LeJ and Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat there is a complete inaction. Such a discriminatory approach is beyond perception and supports the-yet-to-be-accepted prevalent notion that these organisations are working under the thumb of the military establishment. Similarly, Chief Minister Balochistan Dr Malik, who tries to be all things to all people, by remaining dead silent and not speaking openly over these brutal killings of the innocent Shia Hazaras, is smearing his already dubious government. Is there anyone to feel the fortitude of the bereft mothers of Hazars Shias? A persistent mental and emotional turmoil is surrounding their daily lives. We must bear in mind that these ferocious beasts are eliminating humanity, not a specific sect. It is time the whole public, including all international organisations, put pressure on the PML-N government to act against LeJ. Niaz Betab Awaran
