Sir: The Director Generals Military Operations (DGMOs) meeting at the GHQ in Rawalpindi on Tuesday is being regarded as an extraordinarily rare event in the chronicle of the fractured relationship between Pakistan and India. This did not happen during General Kayani’s tenure probably because of the level of mistrust. Only General Satish Nambiar, who was the DGMO of India, visited Pakistan in 1991. Today, General Vinod Bhatia is coming to formally take up the issue of tensions on the Line of Control (LoC). Observers expect a breakthrough on the LoC and it is expected that a permanent ceasefire would be agreed upon. If this happens, it will go a long way to determine the future economic prospects of the region, especially Pakistan, which has been facing the worst economic crisis. This DGMOs meeting was decided, on the invitation of Pakistan, soon after Karzai’s Islamabad and Sartaj Aziz’s New Delhi visits. It seems as if both sides have a new set of proposals, which may lead to kickstarting a high level dialogue between Pakistan and India. Maybe the meeting of the prime ministers of both countries will be finalised as a result. An understanding between the two countries and reaching subsequently an agreement before the US and allied forces complete their withdrawal from Afghanistan is the need of the hour. Let us hope for a positive result. F Z KHAN Islamabad
