Sir: Anti Terrorism Courts (ATC) were established in August 1999 to punish criminals involved in terrorism. The judges appointed to the ATCs get special pays and privileges, so that they perform their duties efficiently. The underlying rationale of an ATC is a speedy trial so that cases are disposed of in less time. Unfortunately, like any other department, these courts have failed to perform to the general expectation and satisfaction of people. Even the Pakistan army has complained about their working. The last nail in the coffin of the ATCs was when Gullu Butt was released. A person seen on national TV breaking and destroying cars and private property was given bail. I believe the ATCs should be closed down. We really need to work on the quality of judges the country is producing. If the problem lies where the buck stops, then no effort however sincere could bear fruit. Engr Shahryar Khan Baseer Peshawar
