Sir: The ongoing energy crisis in Pakistan has gradually worsened during the last decade. As a matter of fact electricity has become indispensable and essential for the socio-economic development of Pakistan. To meet the energy needs of the country, especially that of the province of Punjab, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government is making efforts to foster fast track development of electricity generation projects. Projects like Quaid-e-Azam Solar Park, Sahiwal Coal Fired Power Plant and now Bhikki Gas Turbine Power Plant show the government’s firm resolve to put the economy on the right track through resolving the energy crisis in the country. The gas turbine power project is the first and biggest project in the country’s history and the Punjab government has taken a lead by initiating this project. It is a good omen that the single cycle turbine will start producing 363 megawatt electricity soon whereas with the operation of a second turbine, another 363 megawatt will be added to the national grid. Moreover, a total of 1,180 megawatt will be available through combined stream gas turbine at Bhikki, District Sheikhupura, by December 2017. This will be a historic juncture in the prosperity of Pakistan as so many power generating units being installed in different areas of Pakistan will start yielding thousands of megawatts of electricity under the umbrella of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). It is hoped that darkness will eventually vanish from this country and our future generations will live in a brighter Pakistan. SYED ALI QASIM Lahore
