Sir: Dr Shakil Afridi is to be transferred to Mardan Jail after being convicted under the Frontier Crimes Regulation (FCR) and sentenced to 33 years in prison. A magistrate overturned that sentence this year and it is expected that a retrial will be held. Despite this his case remains filled with discrepancies. The case record from his first trial has been ordered on several occasions but has not been produced. The case has been bouncing around between the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) tribunal and the FCR commissioner with no one ready to take responsibility for bringing the facts to light. Obviously, this has become a hot potato for all involved. This is the man who was responsible for tracking down Osama bin Laden and allegedly committing treason in the process. Given the amount of trouble and the bad reputation that bin Laden’s capture in Abbottabad created for Pakistan, the public needs to know exactly what Dr Afridi did. Osama bin Laden’s presence in Pakistan was a major intelligence and security failure but the people responsible for it put the only man who may have answers behind bars without a fair trial and did not allow him to speak. Undoubtedly, they hope that by the time the case sees the light the event will be too far in the past for people to care. The public needs to know what happened on that day and why. This case must be resolved. AFSHAN KHAN Islamabad
