Sir: In every country of the world, education is always a priority issue. For this purpose, governments make policies related to free education for all. They are also committed to expanding this provision from free education to free lunch for students from low-income homes. Hypothetically, it has been observed that students who are unable to get balanced meals undermine their capacity to focus in class. There is a population of 23.9 percent in Pakistan that lives below the poverty line. The free food lunch programme in schools would be a great help to needy and poor families if it is successfully run under government policy. Better lunches, in turn, stand to nurture better lifelong eating habits and will offer sustainable health for future generations. Any kind of soup, pieces of bread, cucumber salad, banana and porridge should be constituted in a typical lunch in the free food school. This is to ensure that giving all children free lunches will raise academic standards and the interest of young children in gaining education. Every child should get the chance in life they deserve. Unfortunately, for decades, our so-called democratic governments have failed to provide relief to the people in every aspect of life. Will they seriously consider providing free meals to the needy students of a poor society for a better, stronger generation and economy? SYED SADAQAT HUSSAIN Karachi
