Sir: The attack on a military convoy in Peshawar that killed two soldiers on Friday is another sign of the deteriorating security situation in the country’s vital northwestern province. Terrorist attacks and attempted attacks occur almost daily and Peshawar’s law enforcement personnel risk their lives to prevent them, but these unsung heroes of the war against terrorism are finding scant support from the provincial government led by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI). Chief Minister Pervez Khattak made no statements about the attack and his government has not provided any substantial support to either law enforcement agencies or the military in combating terrorism. There is no narrative against terrorism in the province since Imran Khan appears to believe that the terrorists are simply disenchanted tribesmen and law enforcement personnel complain daily that they are not receiving the support from the government that they need. It is also not possible for the federal government to get the provincial government to act as it should because of the political stand off between the PTI and the PML-N. This ludicrous state of affairs cannot be allowed to continue at such a vital time in the country’s existential battle against terrorists. ABDULLAH AHMAD Islamabad
