Sir: The lawyers community gained a lot of respect in the movement for the restoration of the superior judiciary but it started losing respect when the lawyers misbehaved on many occasions with the lower judiciary. Also, they physically beat many police officials on the premises of the courts. Their rudeness extended to the administration and the chief traffic officer in Lahore once publicly admitted that traffic wardens, out of fear, did not apprehend the lawyers no matter even if the latter were involved in serious traffic violations. About a month ago, the lawyers of the five divisions of Punjab gathered on the premises of the Supreme Court (SC) and staged a sit-in to press their demand for the establishment of the Lahore High Court (LHC) branches in their respective divisions. They had a clash with the local police, as a result of which many lawyers and police officials were injured. It is now high time that the bar and bench sit together to make serious efforts so that the respect lost by the legal fraternity may be regained. S TAJAMMAL H RIZVI Lahore
