Sir: This Sunday, on August 17, the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) observed the death anniversary of military dictator Ziaul Haq by presenting it as Gaza Day. Pakistanis are justified to ask the JI if ever it observed a day for the 50,000 civilian and military personnel killed by terrorists in the last one decade. How can the JI call terrorists “brothers” and “martyrs” while rejecting the sacrifices made by the Pakistan army? While JI counterparts were busy holding the azaadi (freedom) march in Islamabad, the JI chose to hold its Gaza march in Karachi by closing the main highway to the airport, throwing the whole city’s traffic into chaos. While watching the television reports of this march, I was disgusted to see a four-year-old boy wearing a fake suicide jacket. Both the boy and his proud father were making victory signs while receiving loud applause from the mob. I do not know what sort of message the JI wants to convey to the outside world. Can anyone stop the JI and many other religious parties whose oxygen supply is hate-filled exploitation of the general public? During the 2013 elections, the Taliban kept the left-wing political parties out of the election campaign by not only threatening them but also killing their people and disturbing their public rallies. The Taliban represent the mess that was created by Zia and now the JI is observing his death anniversary by naming it Gaza Day. What a height of hypocrisy! MASOOD KHANJubail,Saudi Arabia
