Sir: The fact that the computer system of many commercial banks is down causes great hardship to the public. Imagine someone whose father has died in Islamabad and he has to fly there to attend the funeral. Think of someone who has to appear in an interview the next morning. Think of one hundred employees, working in a firm, who have to draw their salaries so that they have some money with them to meet their expenses on Eid, to be told that the system is down and they cannot draw any money. This naturally deprives them of their legitimately-earned wages at a time when these are needed the most. The banks may turn around and say why doesn’t everyone use an ATM card. Fine, if all have to use an ATM card, what on earth are the counter services for? Sometimes even ATM links are down or out of cash or the service is not available for one reason or another. The entire system needs reform. The problem is of such a huge magnitude that it should be considered at the highest level. There should be some law to punish rogue banks. The State Bank of Pakistan should organise surprise checks and impose penalties on banks whose systems are down. The licences of perennial defaulters should be cancelled. Azmat AnsariKarachi
