Sir: A video was uploaded on the internet showing some well-to- do residents of Islamabad protesting against a road blockade for the prime minister’s (PM) motorcade going to Air Headquarters Islamabad. Reportedly, the PM’s entourage was forced to change its route. This reminds me of another incident from General Pervez Musharraf’s tenure when a flat in Askari II, Scheme III, Rawalpindi, got burnt down due to a short circuit, and the rescue team could not arrive in time because of a road blocked for a VIP entourage. General Musharraf took notice of the incident and ordered that the traffic should not be stopped for more than a few minutes, even for his own entourage. I once timed the blockade during one of his moves and found out that his orders were implemented in letter and spirit. I live in Chaklala Cantonment, Rawalpindi, where at least twice a day we encounter VIP movements of the chief justice and the chief of army staff, but these routes are controlled in a manner that the roads are not blocked for more than five minutes for each movement. I suggest that the president, the PM, the governors and the chief ministers should stop creating inconvenience for the public. The hatred of the public against the VIP culture is hitting the roof. And if the VIPs remain deaf and dumb, then all of them will be meted out the same treatment given to Rehman Malik and Dr Ramesh. TALAT KHURSHEED Rawalpindi
